Privacy Policy

Charon is operated by Charon LLC, an Oregon limited liability company. Charon LLC is responsible for the personal data described on this page and decides how it is used. In this policy, “Charon”, “we” and “us” mean Charon LLC.

The short version: Charon collects what it needs to run a writing platform for you. Your personal data is not a product. Charon does not sell your identity or your details to anyone, and does not hand your manuscript to a third party. Vendors may offer their services inside Charon, and Charon may use what it knows about your writing to point you at things worth having, but that happens inside Charon rather than by passing you along.

Publishing is a separate matter and a separate document. If Charon, or an imprint connected to it, ever offers to publish your work, that is a publishing agreement you choose to enter, with terms you see and accept first. Nothing on this page grants any right to publish, sell, or profit from your writing, and nothing here happens to your book without your signature.

What Charon collects

• Your account. Your email address, and a Charon account identifier. If you sign in with Google, Charon receives your email address and basic profile identity from Google, and nothing else.
• Your profile. Whatever you choose to fill in: pen names, author name, bio, genres, photo, language, time zone, preferences, and the content settings that filter what you see.
• Your work. Manuscripts, chapters, notes, and your reference world: characters, locations, timelines, maps, and the rest.
• How the work was written. Charon keeps a provenance record: the trail of composition and revision over time, and text that arrives by paste. It exists so you can prove authorship. It is described in the AI Policy.
• Your activity in the Community. Posts, replies, reactions and feedback you give and receive, and your coin ledger.
• Support reports. When you send one, it carries the page you were on, your browser and version, and your window size, because most problems cannot be reproduced without them.
• Operational logs. Ordinary server and security logs, including IP address, kept briefly to keep the service up and to stop abuse.
• Billing. Handled by our payment provider. Charon receives the fact of a subscription, its plan and status, and a customer reference. Charon never receives or stores your card details.

What Charon does with it

Runs the product: stores and displays your work, computes your reports, creates backups for you, delivers the Community, publishes your author page when you ask it to, and bills your subscription. It also lets us investigate abuse and keep the service secure and working.

Charon does not sell your personal data. Not your identity, not your email, not your manuscript. There are no data brokers in this, and no third party buys their way to you.

Services may be promoted inside Charon. Editors, cover designers, narrators, and other vendors may present what they offer to authors who might want it. That is advertising, and it is clearly marked as such. Your details are not handed to a vendor because they advertised: if you contact one, that is your decision and your information to give.

Charon uses what it knows to fit you to the right things. Genre, readership, activity, and stage of a book are used to match authors with beta readers, with ARC campaigns worth joining, and with features that suit the work in front of you. That matching happens inside Charon, on Charon’s side, and it is how the platform earns its keep for you.

Aggregate statistics describe the platform, not you. Counts and averages across many accounts, such as how long a draft takes, typical word counts by genre, or how a cohort of books moves through production, may be published or shared. They are anonymized and aggregated, cannot be traced to a person or a manuscript, and never include your text.

Who else touches it

Charon runs on rented infrastructure. Each of these companies processes data only to provide their service to Charon, under contract:

• Supabase hosts the database and authentication. Your account, profile, work, and community data live here, encrypted in transit and at rest.
• Vercel hosts and serves the application.
• Our billing provider processes subscriptions as merchant of record, and holds the billing relationship and your card details. They are named here once the arrangement is confirmed.
• Resend delivers transactional email, including the confirmation a reader receives when they join an author’s list.
• Google provides optional sign-in, and Google Drive holds encrypted backups where you have turned backup on.

Beyond these, Charon shares personal data only when the law requires it, or to protect someone from harm. If Charon is ever acquired, the commitments on this page travel with the data, and you will be told before anything changes.

Who at Charon can see your manuscript

This section is about work you have kept to yourself. Anything you choose to share is a different matter: chapters you put up for alpha or beta reactions, work you post in the Community, what you publish on your author page, and, if you ever choose it, work you offer to a reading library on Charon. You decide what may be read, and by whom.

For everything else, Charon is a small operation. Access to stored work is limited to what is needed to run it, and reading your private manuscript is not part of ordinary operations. It happens in narrow cases: when you ask for help with a specific document, when a report of abuse requires it, or when the law does.

Author pages and reader lists

When a reader signs up on your author page, that reader’s email is collected for you. You decide what to send them and when. Charon stores the address, records the consent wording shown at the time, and sends exactly one message of its own: the confirmation email that proves the reader meant to subscribe. Charon does not market to your readers.

For that list, you are the one responsible for how it is used, and Charon processes it on your behalf. Readers can unsubscribe from any confirmation link, and their record is removed.

Cookies and local storage

Charon sets what it needs to keep you signed in and to remember your preferences: your session, your theme and mood, your sidebar state, your editor settings. There are no advertising cookies and no third-party trackers in the app.

Your choices

• Export. Download your prose as .docx or PDF at any time, on any plan. Your work is never locked inside Charon.
• Correct. Edit your profile and your work whenever you like.
• Delete. Ask us to close your account and erase your data. We will confirm, and then do it.
• Access. Ask for a copy of what Charon holds about you.
• Object. Ask us to stop a particular processing, and we will explain what that means for the service.

If you are in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area, or a state with comparable law, these are your rights under it, and Charon honors them wherever you live rather than by geography. Ask through Support and a person will handle it.

How long things are kept

Your work is kept while your account exists. When you delete your account, your work, profile, and provenance record are deleted, and backups age out on their normal cycle. Some records survive because they must: billing history for tax and accounting, and abuse records where deleting them would let the abuse repeat. Community posts you made may remain in conversations others took part in, shown without your name.

Children

Charon is not for children. You must be a legal adult in your jurisdiction to hold an account. If we learn that an account belongs to someone who is not, we close it and delete the data.

Where data is held

Charon’s infrastructure is hosted in the United States. If you are writing from elsewhere, your data is transferred there under the standard contractual protections our providers offer.

Changes, and reaching a person

When this policy changes materially, Charon will say so in the app before the change takes effect. The date at the top is the version you are reading.
