Privacy on author pages

The short version: reading an author page asks nothing of you. If you enter your email in a signup box, Charon stores that address for the author whose page it is and sends you one confirmation email. Charon does not sell your address, does not share it with advertisers, and does not add it to another author’s list.

Whose page this is

Each author page belongs to its author. It is built and hosted on Charon, which is run by Charon LLC, an Oregon limited liability company.

That division matters for your email address. The author is responsible for their reader list: they decide what is sent to it and when. Charon stores the list on the author’s behalf and sends the one confirmation described below. What the author sends you afterwards, and how they handle your address once they export it into their own tools, is theirs to answer for. Ask them, and read their own privacy notice where they have one.

What a signup collects

• Your email address.
• Your name, if the form asked for one and you filled it in. It is optional.
• The date and time you signed up, and which page you signed up on.
• The exact wording shown beside the field at the time, which reads: “Email only. Unsubscribe any time.”

That last one is consent evidence. It is kept so that what you agreed to can be shown later, word for word, rather than remembered.

Cookies and similar technologies. Charon sets what the page needs in order to work. Where Charon uses anything beyond that, such as measurement or analytics, you will be asked first and you can decline without losing access to the page. Separately, the hosting provider keeps the ordinary server logs every website keeps, held briefly to keep the site up and to stop abuse.

Nothing happens until you confirm

Signup is double opt in. Your address sits unconfirmed and unused until you click the link in a confirmation email. If you never click it, it stays that way and goes to nobody. If someone else typed your address in, ignoring that email is enough.

Today that confirmation is the only email Charon itself sends you. If Charon ever sends anything else of its own, it will ask for your agreement or give you a clear way to opt out beforehand, and leaving will always be one click. Everything else you receive comes from the author, sent with the author’s own mail tool.

How your address is used

Charon does not sell your address. It does not rent it, hand it to advertisers or data brokers, or add it to another author’s list. Charon holds it so that you keep your place on the author’s list and so that it can be shown you meant to join.

What the author sends you is the author’s decision, and this notice cannot speak for it.

Leaving the list

Every record carries an unsubscribe link. Using it deletes the record outright rather than flagging it, so nothing of you is kept behind to be mailed by mistake. The author receives that link alongside your address when they export the list, so it can be included in the mail they send you.

Who else touches it

Charon runs on rented infrastructure. Each of these companies handles the data only to provide its service to Charon, under contract:

• Supabase holds the database the page and the list live in, encrypted in transit and at rest.
• Vercel hosts and serves the page you are reading.
• Resend delivers the confirmation email.

Beyond these, your address is disclosed only where the law requires it, or to protect someone from harm.

Where it is held, and for how long

Your address is stored in the United States. If you are writing from elsewhere, it is transferred there under the standard contractual protections these providers offer.

It is kept while you are on the author’s list. When you unsubscribe, or when the page comes down, your record is removed from Charon’s active systems promptly. Copies can persist a while longer in backups and caches, which age out on their normal cycle. If the author has already exported the list, they hold their own copy, and removing that one is theirs to do.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. These are your rights under United Kingdom and European law, and they are honored here wherever you happen to live rather than by geography. Write to support@charonwriter.com and a person handles it.

If you would rather take it further than us, you can complain to your national data protection authority. In the United Kingdom that is the Information Commissioner’s Office; elsewhere in Europe it is the authority for the country you live in.

Young readers

Authors write for young readers, and an author page may be the page for a children’s or young adult book. Being interested in those books is not the same as being old enough to hand over an email address, so the two are kept apart here.

The signup box is not built for children. Charon does not knowingly collect an email address from a child under 13 without a parent or guardian’s agreement, and where local law sets a higher age for consenting to this kind of processing, that higher age applies. If you are below that age where you live, ask a parent or guardian before signing up for anything. If we learn an address was collected this way, we delete it.
